Emersyn Harris created Cards for Kids in 2010 at the age of 8. Harris was hospitalized prior to Cards for Kids for an extended period of time and remembered how good it felt to receive even the smallest of well wishes or gifts, including blue socks she was given by the hospital. After Harris was healthy she began to send cards to kids in hospitals to bring smiles and hope. She has since evolved her organization with many more giving projects including:
- Silly Socks for hospitalized children around Christmas: his year Harris and her team sent out over 6,000 pairs to hospitalized children over the Christmas season.
- People Serving People in Minneapolis, MN: Harris will be sending warm socks for the cold winter months to Minneapolis for the homeless. She has so far gathered over 115 pairs.
- Valentine's Fleece Tie Blankets: Harris will be bringing Valentine's cards and blankets to Douglas County Hospital for Valentine's day to brighten spirits.
To date, Harris has sent out over 100,000 cards for children all across Minnesota and she is looking to expand her efforts outside of the state. She has also been recognized in other ways, including being recognized as one of ten people in the United States as a 2015 USA Unites winner and Alexandria, MN made November 20th Emersyn Harris Day!
